For those people who are so desperate to lose that extra weight to opt for surgery, new research indicates that having a gastric bypass maybe the way to go. The procedure was compared in a study with another popular surgical procedure known as lap-banding and the results were clearly in favor of the gastric bypass.
A gastric bypass is a procedure in which doctors actually reduce the size of the stomach which results in a person needing to eat less to feel full. The lap-band procedure is basically a band that is inserted around the stomach to shrink it, and can be adjusted by the patient to also make them feel full upon eating less. In the study, after a year those who underwent gastric bypass lost 64% of their extra weight compared to only 34% of patients who received a lap-band.
