When it comes to Ground Hog Day 2011, many of us are unsure why he has been given a day in which he has the task of predicting how far we are away from spring. Upon emerging from his hole, he is said to be able to see his shadow which indicates that spring is six weeks away.
It is believed that it was the Roman legions who first introduced Ground Hog Day to the Germans and this year will mark the 125th birthday of Punxsutawney Phil. Usually fed with an elixir, he will make his move out of his burrow on Globber’s Knob, and look for his shadow at which point we will know how much longer we have to endure winter.
