Asylum Seekkers Drowning Off Christmas Island

Christmas Island may sound like a happy place to be at this time of year but for a boat load of people looking to escape to the island for asylum it is anything but.

Their wooden boat crashed into a cluster of rocks during rough sees and 24 people have subsequently died, with many more reportedly injured.

Residents of the island have been trying to help out by throwing life preservers to the people in the water but many are too injured from the crash to grab onto them.

Christmas Island is a remote Australian island in the Indian Ocean, where many people from Asian countries come to, to start their lives over.

Australian authorities have sent rescue crews to the area but because of the rough waters, they are having a hard time reaching stranded survivors.
