In shocking news first made public yesterday afternoon, Australian born actor Heath Ledger is dead.
He was found by a massage therapist and a housekeeper in a Manhattan apartment, lying naked and face down on a bed, a bottle of prescription sleeping pills nearby.
“We are all deeply saddened and shocked by this accident,” Ledger’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said in a statement Tuesday night. “This is an extremely difficult time for his loved ones and we are asking the media to please respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation until the facts are known.”
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne has stated that currently, there is no evidence that Ledger committed suicide, thus an investigation is underway to determine
his cause of death.
An autopsy has been scheduled for today to attempt to determine the cause of Ledger’s death.
“I had such great hope for him,” said Mel Gibson, who played Ledger’s vengeful father in “The Patriot,” in a statement. “He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss.”
Heath Ledger was 28 years old when he died.
