Children Living With Smokers Usually More Hungry

If you live with a smoker, chances are you will be more hungry than you would be if you lived with people who do not smoke.
This interesting fact comes to us from a study performed by researchers from New York and shows that children whose parents smoke are more likely to be malnurrished and underfed.
The researchers looked at more than 8000 households whom had previously participated in CDC surveys.
They found that 23% of households with children had at least 1 smoker, a number that rose significantly for low-income families.
Of these families 17% of children were food insecure, a fact that also was more prevalent in children of low-income families.
“We know that there are long-term consequences of food insecurity for children. They are more likely to do poorly in school, to have iron deficiency and anemia, and to have behavioral and social problems,” says study author Dr. Michael Weitzman.
