Companies responsible for manufacturing cough and cold medicines have released joint guidelines saying that these types of medicines should not be given to children under 4 years of age.

Pediatricians have been lobbying Congress for a while now to take a look into over the counter cough and cold medicines as they can be very dangerous when given to young children.

Earlier this year the Food and Drug Administration recommended that OTC cough and cold medicines not be given to children under the age of 2.

It is good to see companies stepping up to the plate, voluntarily deciding to change their policies to make sure that young children are not put at serious health risk by these OTC medicines.

Some leading cough and cold medicines that are being recommended not to be offered to young children include; Dimetapp manufactured by Wyeth, NyQuil from Procter & Gamble and Tylenol and PediaCare from Johnson & Johnson.

Nothing works better than than Buckwheat honey for children with a cough. It is the only honey that has been well studied for children’s cold and cough. There are some good reasons why researchers are using buckwheat honey: It is darker and has more antioxidant properties (from phenolics, peptides, organic acids, enzymes, Maillard reaction products, and possibly other minor components) than other honey’s. There is a web site that does a good job of bringing together the scientific research on this. There it has a lot of links directly referencing well respected scientific articles.
