Putting a fan in your baby’s room may reduce the risk of that child developing SIDS, otherwise known as sudden infant death syndrome.
According to researchers from Kaiser Permanente, infants who sleep with a fan in their room are up to 70% less likely to die from SIDS.
Furthermore, infants who sleep with an open window to increase ventalation are also at a reduced risk of dying from the disorder.
One of the theories behind why SIDS occurs is that babies inhale carbon dioxide due to poor ventalated rooms in which they are sleeping in.
To test this theory, the research team interviewed 185 mothers from southern California whose babies had succumbed to SIDS, comparing their findings with mothers whose babies were still alive.
They learned that those babies who slept in a room with an open windo had more than a 30% reduced risk of developing SIDS, but those who slept in a room with a fan were 72% less likely to develop SIDS.
