Results of a new report find that many types of breakfast cereals contain more than 50 percent of sugar, which is very bad for young children.
The study found that one serving of 11 popular cereals sold in the United States, contains as much sugar as 1 glazed doughnut, a fact that is very bad for children when it comes to morning nutrition and a healthy start to their day.
If this is not bad enough, certain cereals that are formulated for the US market contain even more sugar than the same cereal formulated for other countries around the world.
The researchers analyzed 91 children between 6 and 16 years of age, and found that on average, they tended to pour themselves a bowl of cereal far bigger than the recommended serving size.
“Be sure to read the product labels, and choose cereals that are high in fiber and low in sugar and sodium,” Gayle Williams, deputy editor of Consumer Reports Health, said in a statement.
The healthiest cereal according to the researchers would have to be Cheerios as they contain only three grams of fiber per serving and one gram of sugar.
The worst type of cereal health wise would have to be Golden Crisp and Kellogg’s Honey Smacks, both of which contain over 50 percent sugar.
