It is being reported that the director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Elias Zerhouni has decided to step down from his position.
Zerhouni, 57, recently announced that he will be resigning as of next month, after leading the NIH, which is currently struggling for funding for the last 6 years.
Zerhouni, will be remembered as a quiet but very efficient leader of the NIH. Despite a limited amount of funding, he has totally revamped the entire organization for the better, to allow for the continued push of furthered enhancements in innovative science.
He was President Bush’s candidate to lead the NIH, working before hand as a radiologist who did great work in the field of improving medical imaging.
“Science changes fast. You want your scientists to have maximum freedoms to explore in different ways,” Zerhouni told The Associated Press.
He has stated that before he will accept another job, he would like to write about his experiences as director of the NIH.
“I know there’s speculation that I’m going back to Johns Hopkins,” Dr. Zerhouni said. “That’s not been decided by me at all. I want to finish here, take a few weeks, maybe write a bit and evaluate what I want to do next.”
