According to researchers of a news study, people diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers are at a significantly increased risk of developing other types of cancer.
Every year in the US, more than 1 million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers, a fact that puts them at risk for actual skin cancer, as well as other types of cancers.
According to the researchers the risk of a type of cancer forming after non-melanoma skin cancer is greater in young people than in older people.
“It seems like non-melanoma skin cancer, even though it is a non-fatal disease, may be a warning sign for increased risk of other, more serious cancers,” said Anthony Alberg, a researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Some common types of non-melanoma skin cancers include; basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, both of which are very common types of skin cancer.
The study is published in the online Aug. 26 in theJournal of the National Cancer Institute.
