The FDA have released a statement urging Americans not to eat tomalley in American lobster due to a form of contamination that can result in paralytic shellfish poisoning.

The agency stated that this warning applies to tomalley, which is the soft green substance found in the lobster body cavity. They do however say that the rest of the white meat found in the lobster is good to eat.

According to the FDA, algae bloom has contaminated fishing grounds this year, thus the warning is being issued pertaining to the lobster.

They stress that cooking lobster does not reduce the risk of toxic contamination from eating tomalley, and urge consumers not to eat it.
Symptoms associated with paralytic shell fish poisoning usually show up pretty quickly and include; tingling and numbness of the mouth, face or neck, muscle weakness, headache and nausea.

So far no deaths have been reported in people eating the tomalley.
