Tobacco could one day be used to fight cancer according to US scientists.
We all know that tobacco is the main cause of millions of cancer diagnosis but now researchers state that it could also lend a helping hand when it comes to treatment.
Scientists working for the National Academy of Sciences state that they have been able to grow certain components of a cancer vaccine from parts of the tobacco plant.
They state that their vaccine could treat a type of cancer known as lymphoma.
The plant made vaccine works by kickstarting the body’s immune system, and may even be able to be tailored to the individual needs of cancer patients.
“This would be a way to treat cancer without side effects,” said senior author Ronald Levy of the Stanford University Medical Center. “The idea is to marshal the body’s own immune system to fight cancer.”
