A new drug manufactured by Amgen has been shown to prevent bone loss in men with prostate cancer.

The drug is called denosumab and in clinical trials on prostate cancer patients, proved to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

More than 1,400 prostate cancer patients took part in the study which lasted 3 years.

Some participants were given a placebo, while others received androgen deprivation therapy.

Participants given denosumab, opposed to a placebo, showed increased amounts of minerals in their bones, thus making them stronger.

A surprising study finding was that more than half the participants experienced less than half the incidence of new vertebral fractures when compared to the placebo group.

Amgen shares rose 41 cents to $51.42 in early trading Monday.
