In its first weekend at movie theatres, Get Smart has landed on top earning an estimated 39.2 million dollars.

The movie is an adaptation of the 1960’s British comedy, starring Steve Carell from the British show The Office.

Kung Fu Panda from DreamWorks Animation and Paramount tied for second place at the weekend box office with The Incredible Hulk from Universal.

The Love Guru, starring Canadian funnyman Mike Myers had a disappointing weekend at the theatre, opened in the 4th spot, earning just over 19 million.

In total, the top 12 movies at the box office this weekend earned more than 136.9 million dollars, a number up almost 10% from this time a year ago.

“While the country may be suffering with a so-called recession, people are finding movies a fairly inexpensive way to get their entertainment,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. “This proves the conventional wisdom that, during tough economic times, the movies flourish.”

Get Smart was a British show? Pretty sure it was American — unless you are saying that there was a show that didn’t have Don Adams as the star.

Get Smart looks okay overall, though Steve Carell seems to be veering more and more toward slapstick-style humor
