A painting by Francis Bacon has been sold at Sotheby’s contemporary sale on Wednesday for more than 86 million dollars.

The painting entitled “Triptych, 1976″ sold for a record amount for a post war piece and was a record sell in the history of the nearly 300 year old auction house.

The painting had been set at a price of 70 million dollars, and its final tally far surpassed the previous record for a sale of contemporary art, which was previously just over 72 mill.

Bacon’s next most valuable painting is his “Study for Innocent X, 1952,” sold by the same auction house last year for more than 58 million dollars.

According to a spokeswoman for the auction house three bidders had placed bids for the painting. The winners have remained annonomous for obvious reasons.

Francis Bacon died in 1992 at the age of 82.
