Acupuncture Increases IVF Success Rate

It is being reported that the results of a new study find that acupuncture treatments can increase a woman’s chances of undergoing successful IVF treatment.

For their study, scientists from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the VU University in Amsterdam analyzed 7 studies including a total of 1,366 women undergoing IVF treatment.

Women in the study were put into 3 groups; 1 group received acupuncture, another received fake acupuncture, and the third received no acupuncture.

Surprisingly, the group of women who received acupuncture had a 65% increased risk of undergoing successful IVF treatment compared to the other groups.

“Complementing the embryo transfer process with acupuncture seems to increase the odds of pregnancy by 65 percent, compared to sham acupuncture or no adjuvant treatment,” said lead researcher Eric Manheimer, a research associate at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Integrative Medicine.

For years, acupuncture has been used in China as a way to boost the fertility level of women.

“It is being taken more seriously across our specialty,” and more doctors are training in it, said Dr. William Gibbons, who runs a fertility clinic in Baton Rouge, La., and is past president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. “I have not seen proof … but we wouldn’t mind at all” if it turned out to work, he said.
